LONDON — On Friday, Downing Street announced the passing of Nick Starmer, the younger brother of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Nick, who was 60 years old, succumbed to cancer on Thursday.
The Prime Minister, aged 62, honored his brother’s memory, referring to him as a “wonderful man.” He expressed his feelings, stating, “He faced all of life’s challenges with both courage and a sense of humor. We will miss him immensely.”
Keir Starmer also took a moment to express his gratitude to those who cared for Nick during his illness. “The dedication and kindness of his medical team was truly appreciated,” he remarked.
Initially, the Prime Minister had plans to go on holiday on Friday, but those plans are now changed, as he is expected to remain at home during this difficult time.
Growing up in the Surrey area of southeast London, the Starmer brothers were part of a family with four siblings. Nick faced learning challenges due to complications during his birth.
In a recent biography authored by Tom Baldwin, the Prime Minister opened up about his experiences growing up with his brother. “We were six in total, which meant I never felt lonely, and I shared a room with him. However, Nick struggled to make friends and endured ridicule from other children who called him ‘thick’ or ‘stupid,’” Starmer recounted.
He emphasized the importance of language, stating, “Even today, I consciously avoid using such terms to describe anyone.”
