NEW YORK — Right-handed pitcher Jonathan Loáisiga has secured a one-year contract with the New York Yankees, which is valued at $5 million. This agreement comes as he makes his comeback following Tommy John surgery and has the potential to escalate his earnings to $10.5 million over the next two seasons.
The contract includes a signing bonus of $500,000 and a salary of $4.5 million for the upcoming season. The Yankees also hold a team option worth $5 million for the year 2026, without any buyout clause. Additionally, there are performance bonuses in place for Loáisiga in 2026, where he can earn up to $500,000 based on his innings pitched, receiving $100,000 for reaching 50 innings and for each additional five innings up to 70.
According to pitching coach Matt Blake, Loáisiga is expected to return to the mound in either late April or May, following his surgery on May 1. Blake expressed confidence in Loáisiga’s potential role, indicating, “I imagine him being one of the high-leverage guys. Obviously, we got to take some time to get him right, make sure we don’t rush him into competition.”
Loáisiga previously earned a salary of $2.5 million in 2023 during his final year of arbitration eligibility before becoming a free agent. He appeared in three relief games in the initial week of the season but was quickly sidelined due to a strained right flexor muscle. Subsequently, he underwent Tommy John surgery performed by the team’s doctor, Dr. Christopher Ahmad.
In the 2023 season, Loáisiga was limited to just 17 games due to right elbow inflammation, which kept him absent from the Yankees from April 5 to August 8. Over his seven seasons in the league, he has compiled a record of 19 wins and 11 losses with an ERA of 3.44, featuring 11 starts and 152 appearances in relief. Throughout his career, he has struck out 207 batters and issued 72 walks over a total of 219 and two-thirds innings pitched, boasting an average sinker velocity of 97.8 mph in 2023.
