HONOLULU — In an exciting finish at the Diamond Head Classic, Gytis Nemeiksa contributed significantly with 25 points and made a crucial defensive play by blocking a 3-point attempt as time expired in overtime, leading Hawaii to a narrow 73-70 victory over Oakland in the third-place matchup.
Nemeiksa also secured 11 rebounds for the Rainbow Warriors, who now hold an 8-4 record. Harry Rouhliadeff had a solid game, scoring 15 points on an efficient 5-for-9 shooting while also going a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. Ryan Rapp added to the team’s effort, scoring 12 points, including two 3-pointers.
Malcolm Christie was the standout performer for the Golden Grizzlies, finishing with an impressive 27 points. Tuburu Niavalurua contributed with 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds, helping keep Oakland competitive in the game.
With only 27 seconds remaining in regulation, Naivalurua executed a reverse layup, putting the Grizzlies ahead 64-62. Although Aaron Hunkin-Claytor’s bank shot attempt did not go in, Tanner Christensen hustled to secure the offensive rebound and drew a foul. He successfully converted both free throws with just 4.8 seconds on the clock, which tied the game and ultimately led to overtime after both teams were unable to take advantage of late possessions.
