A man has been charged with assault and menacing after allegedly attacking a man and a woman with a knife at Grand Central subway station in Manhattan. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening around 10:15 p.m., resulted in injuries for both victims; a 42-year-old man sustained a wrist injury, while a 26-year-old woman suffered a neck injury. According to police reports, they were both in stable condition following their treatment at Bellevue Hospital.

The assailant faces multiple charges, including assault, reckless endangerment, menacing, harassment, disorderly conduct, and a weapons violation. As of Wednesday, it remains unclear who will provide legal representation for him during upcoming court proceedings.

This assault incident has heightened public fears regarding subway security, particularly following a recent case where a man was arrested for setting a woman on fire while she was on a subway train, resulting in her death.

Mayor Eric Adams addressed the media in Harlem, indicating that the suspect in the earlier incident has a documented history of mental illness. The New York Post reported that the woman who was attacked had just exited the No. 4 train and was en route to work when she was brutally assaulted. She described how she was knocked to the ground as the assailant shouted, “what’s your problem?” before he attacked her with a small knife, inflicting a cut on her throat.

This violent incident occurred shortly after another suspect, Sebastian Zapeta, age 33, appeared in a Brooklyn criminal court, facing charges for the murder of the woman he allegedly set on fire in the subway. Federal immigration officials have stated that Zapeta is originally from Guatemala and entered the United States illegally. He remained silent during the court appearance and did not enter a plea. Currently held at the Rikers Island jail complex, he is scheduled to return to court on Friday, although his legal representation has yet to request bail.
