NEW YORK — Mikal Bridges achieved a remarkable season-high by scoring 41 points, helping the New York Knicks secure a narrow 117-114 victory over the San Antonio Spurs, who saw a dazzling performance from rookie Victor Wembanyama on Christmas Day. The young star lit up the court with 42 points and established a new Spurs record for points scored on this holiday, while also contributing 18 rebounds, four assists, and four blocked shots, including six successful three-pointers.
Bridges, delivering a pivotal offensive effort, shot an impressive 17 for 25 from the field and 6 for 9 from beyond the arc. His scoring prowess enabled the Knicks to extend their winning streak to five games, elevating their season record to 20-10. Alongside him, Karl-Anthony Towns contributed 21 points and nine rebounds, while Jalen Brunson added 20 points to the team total. Josh Hart also had a solid performance, finishing with 12 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists.
On the Spurs’ side, Jeremy Sochan also made a significant impact by scoring 21 points and pulling down nine rebounds. Despite their efforts, the Spurs were unable to secure the win, as they struggled to control the boards, relinquishing 17 offensive rebounds, which ultimately cost them the game. In crucial moments leading to the end, Hart’s clutch plays allowed the Knicks to maintain possession and control the clock effectively.
Bridges, who is largely recognized for his defensive contributions in his first year with the Knicks, showcased his offensive capabilities, highlighting his potential as a key player for the team. A critical moment in the game came when the Spurs narrowed the deficit to just one point with two minutes remaining after a pair of free throws by Chris Paul. However, Bridges quickly responded with two consecutive jump shots, widening the lead to five points with just 1:18 left on the clock.
Notably, Wembanyama’s outstanding performance not only electrified fans but also broke the previous franchise record for most points scored by a Spurs player on Christmas Day, surpassing LaMarcus Aldridge’s previous record of 33 points set in 2016.
Looking ahead, the Spurs will stay in New York for a matchup against the Brooklyn Nets on Friday, while the Knicks are set to travel to Orlando the same day.
