BOSTON — On Monday, the Boston Red Sox secured a two-year contract worth $18.25 million with left-handed pitcher Patrick Sandoval, who is currently in recovery following elbow ligament surgery.
At the age of 28, Sandoval made 16 appearances as a starter for the Los Angeles Angels this past season, achieving a record of 2-8 with a 5.08 earned run average (ERA). His season took a downturn when he suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) on June 21 during a matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers, while pitching to former teammate Shohei Ohtani.
Subsequent to the injury, Sandoval underwent internal brace surgery just five days later. This surgical procedure necessitates a recovery period of approximately one year.
The financial arrangement includes a salary of $5.5 million for the upcoming season and an increase to $12.75 million for 2026.
Throughout his six seasons in Major League Baseball, all spent with the Angels, Sandoval has accumulated a record of 19 wins and 45 losses, with a 4.01 ERA over the course of 100 starts combined with seven relief appearances.
In addition to his club responsibilities, Sandoval represented Mexico in the 2023 World Baseball Classic and was honored with a selection to the All-WBC team after posting a win-loss record of 1-0 and a stellar 1.23 ERA in two starts.
