EVANSTON, Ill. — In a commanding performance on Saturday, Nick Martinelli contributed 23 points and Brooks Barnhizer secured his fifth consecutive double-double as Northwestern triumphed over local rival DePaul with a score of 84-64.
Barnhizer showcased an impressive game with 21 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, four steals, and three blocked shots. He has achieved a unique milestone this season, being the only player nationwide to post a double-double involving points, rebounds, three assists, three steals, and three blocked shots on two occasions. His consecutive double-doubles tie him with Ohio State’s Evan Turner, who accomplished the same feat in 2009, for the record of most consecutive in the Big Ten since 1995.
The Wildcats (9-3) established a solid foundation for their victory by leading DePaul by 10 points at halftime. They completed the game with a shooting accuracy of 53.1% (34 of 64) and were aggressive on defense, accumulating 14 steals and capitalizing on 18 turnovers from the Blue Demons. Matthew Nicholson was effective, hitting 6 of 8 attempts and finishing with 14 points alongside three steals, while Jalen Leach added 13 points and five steals.
For DePaul (8-4), Jacob Meyer was the standout scorer, leading the team with 18 points. Conor Enright contributed with 12 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, while David Skogman had 11 points with a matching 10 rebounds. CJ Gunn also made an impact coming off the bench, scoring 10 points and securing four steals.
Looking ahead, Northwestern is set to play its final nonconference game on December 29 against Northeastern, while DePaul will host Loyola of Maryland on December 28.
