Simmons nets 29 points in Gardner-Webb’s 84-79 victory over East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. — In a thrilling matchup on Saturday night, the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs clinched a narrow victory against East Carolina, triumphing 84-79, fueled by Darryl Simmons II’s impressive performance of 29 points.

Simmons also contributed five rebounds to his team’s efforts, leading the Runnin’ Bulldogs, who improved their record to 5-8. Anthony Selden added to the scoring with 18 points, shooting 5 for 13 from the field, including three successful three-point attempts out of six. Selden also converted 5 of 8 attempts from the charity stripe. Isaiah Richards made an impact as well, contributing 12 points on an efficient 6 of 8 shooting. This victory marked a much-needed end to a five-game losing streak for Gardner-Webb.

On the opposing side, the East Carolina Pirates (8-5) were led by RJ Felton, who scored 19 points. Joran Riley had a solid all-around game, contributing 18 points, along with eight rebounds, four steals, and two blocks. Cam Hayes also added 18 points and provided four assists for East Carolina.

The first half saw Simmons score 11 points, but Gardner-Webb found themselves behind at halftime, trailing 37-35. However, Simmons stepped up in the second half, notching 18 additional points to help his team secure the five-point victory.
