NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt Commodores achieved a commanding victory over Austin Peay, winning 85-55 on Saturday, with Jason Edwards contributing 16 points and Tyler Nickel adding 12 points to the team’s total.
The Commodores, now boasting an impressive 11-1 record, had an outstanding performance with nine players scoring throughout the game. They maintained their perfect home record at 7-0, shooting an impressive 60.4% from the floor, converting 29 of their 48 attempts. Devin McGlockton also made a notable contribution, scoring 11 points for the Commodores.
In contrast, Austin Peay struggled offensively, with LJ Thomas leading the team with 20 points and Tate McCubbin contributing 10 points. The Governors, now standing at 4-8, had a challenging shooting night, managing only 31.7% accuracy, with 19 successful shots out of 60 attempts.
Vanderbilt quickly established control of the game, jumping to a 27-7 lead within the first ten minutes, essentially securing the win early on. By halftime, the Commodores had built a substantial lead of 47-20. Austin Peay’s only lead in the game came just 17 seconds after tip-off with Isaac Haney’s layup.
With this victory, Vanderbilt improved its all-time record against Austin Peay to 18-2, having won the previous matchup decisively, 77-51, on December 18, 2021. Notably, the two victories for Austin Peay against Vanderbilt occurred during the 1939-40 season.
Austin Peay will look to break a six-game losing streak when they face NAIA opponent Brescia on December 29. Meanwhile, Vanderbilt is set to host New Orleans on December 30.
