Rubi Patricia Vergara was a gifted 14-year-old who was known for her artistic talents and heartfelt musical abilities, according to reflections shared by family and friends during her funeral services on Saturday morning.

Vergara was a student at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, where she tragically lost her life due to gun violence during an incident that also claimed the life of her teacher, Erin West, age 42.

“Rubi was a soft-spoken and kind-hearted individual who truly cared for others,” stated Tom Flaherty, the lead pastor at City Church. “In addition, her faith was remarkably profound for someone so young.”

Her memorial was held at City Church, conveniently located near the school, while West’s funeral is scheduled for Monday at Doxa Church in Madison, as noted in her obituary.

As for the current status of injured students from the incident, two remain hospitalized in critical yet stable condition, as reported by UW Hospital.

A family friend, Dawn Moris, highlighted Vergara’s empathetic nature during her speech. She noted that Vergara frequently created personalized birthday cards for friends and family, utilizing digital art, origami, and engaging in crocheting. Moris presented the congregation with a small crocheted smiley face potato, a testament to Vergara’s creativity.

“She approached every endeavor with a mix of care and creativity,” Moris remarked.

Additionally, Vergara was an accomplished keyboardist in her family’s worship band, possessing the remarkable skill to hear a tune and replicate it on the piano. As a vocalist, she had a unique ability to harmonize beautifully and was often described as singing “like an angel,” according to Moris.

During the service, Vergara’s aunt honored her memory by playing her favorite song, “Shoulders” by for King & Country, on the guitar. Her uncle, Andy Remus, expressed gratitude to the community of Madison for their support during the past week.

Meanwhile, authorities reported that the alleged shooter, 15-year-old Natalie “Samantha” Rupnow, took her own life following the attack at the school and later succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital. Investigators have revealed that Rupnow was in contact with a man in California, who was supposedly planning an assault on a government building. The motivation behind Rupnow’s tragic actions continues to be a focal point of the ongoing investigation.
