FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets are facing a pivotal decision regarding their defensive lineman Quinnen Williams as they prepare to take on the Los Angeles Rams this Sunday. Williams has been nursing a hamstring injury that has kept him sidelined throughout the week, and his participation in the game remains uncertain, making him a game-time decision.
Williams, a two-time Pro Bowl athlete who has accumulated six sacks this season, sustained his injury during the Jets’ recent 32-25 victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars last Sunday. On Friday, the team deemed him questionable in their final injury report leading up to the match.
Interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich is considering pushing Williams to play, expressing optimism about his chances. “We’re going to push it with Quinnen,” Ulbrich commented, emphasizing that Williams worked with trainers during Friday’s practice session. Traditionally, players who do not practice at all during the final session before a game are unlikely to participate, but Ulbrich believes Williams may be an exception.
“This is a unique case, as he’s a player who can potentially perform without any practice,” Ulbrich noted, pointing out the nature of Williams’ position. He further elaborated on how defensive players often don’t extend their strides as much as other athletes, suggesting that Williams might get away with playing despite his hamstring issue. “That said, we have to evaluate the severity of the injury to ensure he can play effectively and protect himself,” Ulbrich added. “In the coming days, we’ll gather more insights to make an informed decision that benefits both him and the team.”
In contrast to Williams’ uncertain status, nickel cornerback Michael Carter II has been ruled out due to ongoing back issues. Ulbrich expressed frustration over Carter’s absence, recognizing his crucial role in the defense. “He’s a vital piece for us,” Ulbrich mentioned. “He’s the facilitator who connects our secondary to the linebackers.”
Isaiah Oliver is expected to step in for Carter, joining cornerbacks Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed in the effort to contain Rams’ star receivers Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua. Reed, who missed last week’s game due to a groin injury, is cleared to participate this Sunday.
Meanwhile, other players facing uncertain statuses include right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker (ankle), running back Braelon Allen (back), and defensive tackle Leki Fotu (knee), all of whom were listed as questionable but participated fully in practice on Friday. Fotu, who has been out for the past seven games, had his 21-day practice window activated earlier this week and could potentially return from injured reserve for this matchup, marking his second comeback this season after previously dealing with a hamstring injury.
“He does have a chance, especially given Quinnen’s situation,” Ulbrich stated, noting that Fotu has shown promise during practice. “It’s been a good week for him.”
