NEWARK, N.J. — In an exciting home opener on Wednesday night, Noora Tulus netted the first of four goals for the New York Sirens in the second period, leading the team to a 4-2 triumph over the Toronto Sceptres. The Sirens harnessed this momentum to secure their victory.
The night was remarkable for several players, as Tulus, captain Micah Zandee-Hart, and Emmy Fecteau all recorded their first goals in the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL). Jaime Bourbonnais also contributed to the scoring. Notably, both Zandee-Hart and Bourbonnais found the back of the net on power plays, with the Sirens capitalizing on two of their four power play opportunities. In contrast, the Sceptres struggled, failing to score on their lone power play chance.
In the third period, Toronto made a strong push, scoring twice to narrow the gap. Hannah Miller scored her second goal of the season just three minutes into the period, while Kali Flanagan added another goal, unassisted, with only 30 seconds left on the clock.
After facing a challenging second period where they were outshot 14-7, the Sceptres rallied in the final frame, achieving a 14-9 shot advantage. Ultimately, New York finished the match with 30 shots, while Toronto recorded 29.
In goal, Corinne Schroeder made 27 saves for New York, and Kristen Campbell stopped 26 shots for the Sceptres. Last season, Toronto had a significant upper hand in the series, winning four out of five games against the Sirens.
The Sceptres are now on a three-game losing streak, matching the longest stretch of this nature they experienced last season. Looking ahead, Toronto is set to host Montreal on Saturday, while New York will face off against Minnesota at home on Sunday.
