BOSTON — In an exciting showdown, the Boston Fleet triumphed over the Ottawa Charge with a score of 3-2 on Tuesday night, thanks to the first goals of the season scored by Jamie Lee Rattay, Shay Maloney, and Hannah Brandt.
The highlight of the game came when Hilary Knight skillfully intercepted the puck behind the Ottawa goal and cleverly passed it to Brandt, who delivered a precise wrist-shot. This shot ricocheted off the back post and found the net, sealing the scoring at the 12:34 mark of the final period.
Rattay opened the scoring for Boston (2-0-0-2) early in the second period, marking her first point of the season and giving the Fleet a 1-0 advantage. However, Shiann Darkangelo quickly leveled the score with a goal at 13:11 left in the period. Just over a minute later, Maloney restored Boston’s lead. The action continued as Aneta Tejralová scored for Ottawa with a one-timer, which was set up by Brianne Jenner, tying the game again at 2-2 heading into the third period.
Key points from the match revealed that the Charge struggled to capitalize on power plays, going 0-for-3 and only converting 20% of their opportunities this season so far. On the other hand, the Fleet showed a marked improvement in their offensive output, having managed seven goals in their latest two games after struggling to score just two in their initial losses to Toronto and Minnesota.
A significant moment in the game unfolded when Shiann Darkangelo, who previously had only one assist in 17 games for Boston before her trade to Ottawa earlier this year, scored her first career goal by jabbing in a rebound from a shot by Jincy Roese around seven minutes into the second period.
The standout player for the Fleet was Aerin Frankel, who successfully blocked 24 of the 26 shots she faced.
Looking ahead, Ottawa will continue its tough road trip with the second of five consecutive away games on Thursday against the Minnesota Frost.
Meanwhile, the Fleet will have a break until December 27, when they will take on the Toronto Sceptres in their next match-up.
