Kochetkov secures initial shutout of the season, leading Hurricanes to 4-0 victory over Islanders

RALEIGH, N.C. — Pyotr Kochetkov achieved his first shutout of the season, stopping 32 shots, as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the New York Islanders 4-0 on Tuesday night.

Sebastian Aho contributed to the victory with a goal and an assist, while Andrei Svechnikov, Jordan Martinook, and Tyson Jost each added a goal. Shayne Gostisbehere recorded two assists during the game.

This victory marked the Hurricanes’ first back-to-back wins since the end of November. In contrast, the Islanders suffered their second three-game stretch of the season without earning any points. Goalie Ilya Sorokin was removed from the game after giving up four goals on 23 shots in two periods, and Marcus Hogberg took over in the third, making six saves.

Kochetkov was busy early, facing 13 shots in the first period, but he saw less action in the third, with just nine shots. This shutout also marked the Hurricanes’ second of the season, and they successfully killed off a single penalty during the game.

Takeaways from the match indicate that the Islanders have experienced five shutouts this season, with this being their first since October. The bigger issue may be their defensive struggles, having allowed 13 goals in their past three games. The Hurricanes demonstrated resilience, finishing their homestand with a record of 3-1-0, suggesting that the difficulties they faced during a recent stretch of four losses in five games may now be behind them. They avenged a previous 4-3 defeat to the Islanders that occurred on December 7.

A key moment came early in the first period when the Hurricanes scored two goals within a span of less than three minutes, bringing their first-period goals tally to 34 in 31 games.

A notable statistic is that three of Svechnikov’s 12 goals this season have been scored during power plays against the Islanders.

Looking ahead, the Hurricanes will travel to Washington for a game on Thursday night, while the Islanders will conclude their three-game road trip on Saturday against Toronto.
