Daren Sammy has officially been named the head coach for the West Indies cricket team across all formats, which includes responsibilities for the test team starting next year.
Cricket West Indies announced this news on Tuesday, stating that Sammy’s first official match in charge of the test team will take place during the home series against Australia, set for June 2025.
Andre Coley, who has been serving as the head coach for the red-ball team since 2023, will continue in that role for the upcoming tour of Pakistan in January. After the Pakistan series, Coley is expected to transition into high-performance responsibilities within Cricket West Indies.
Sammy’s leadership has already yielded positive results; under his guidance, the Twenty20 team progressed from ninth to fifth place in the ICC rankings. Additionally, he successfully steered the one-day international team to a clean sweep against Bangladesh with a 3-0 victory, breaking an 11-match winless streak, which was preceded by a successful ODI series win over England.
The 41-year-old Sammy, who hails from Saint Lucia, boasts an impressive playing record with 38 test matches and 126 One Day Internationals for the West Indies.
According to Cricket West Indies president Kishore Shallow, Sammy’s exemplary leadership qualities have been evident throughout his time managing the white-ball teams. Shallow emphasized that Sammy’s vision, commitment, and ability to motivate players position him as the perfect candidate to lead the West Indies across all formats of the game.
