The national player of the week in men’s college basketball for Week 6 has been named as Johni Broome from Auburn.
Broome, a senior standing at 6 feet 10 inches tall from Plant City, Florida, has made history by being the first player this season to earn the AP men’s college basketball player of the week award twice.
In a commanding performance, he recorded 21 points, 20 rebounds, six assists, and three blocks within just 26 minutes as the second-ranked Auburn Tigers dominated Ohio State with a staggering score of 91-53.
Following this impressive game held in Atlanta, Broome made a swift return to Auburn to participate in his graduation ceremony later that evening.
The All-American forward’s current average stands at 19.7 points and 12.7 rebounds per game as he prepares for Auburn’s upcoming match against Georgia State on Tuesday night.
In the runner-up position is Lamont Butler from Kentucky.
The senior player, hailing from Moreno Valley, California, showcased an impressive performance by going a perfect 10 for 10 from the field, which included six three-pointers.
He achieved a remarkable total of 33 points and contributed six assists in Kentucky’s 93-85 victory over Louisville.
Notably, Butler is recognized as the only Division I player since the 1996-97 season to accomplish this feat of shooting perfectly, scoring at least 33 points, and attaining a minimum of six assists in a single game.
Several players also received honorable mentions for their recent performances.
Jamichael Stillwell from Milwaukee, Jordan Gainey from Tennessee, and Tyrese Hunter from Memphis are all players to note for their contributions during the week.
Looking ahead, Joshua Jefferson from Iowa State is another player to watch closely.
Often not in the spotlight alongside the high-performing backcourt of the third-ranked Cyclones, Jefferson, a 6-foot-9 junior from Las Vegas, is currently averaging 11.5 points and eight rebounds per game.
In a notable game against Iowa, he achieved 19 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists without a single turnover in an 89-80 win, followed by a performance of 13 points, eight rebounds, and three assists in only 25 minutes during a blowout victory over Omaha.
