IOWA CITY, Iowa — Owen Freeman equaled his career-high by scoring 22 points as Iowa dominated New Orleans with a decisive 104-57 victory on Sunday.
The Hawkeyes bounced back impressively following their first home defeat, which came at the hands of No. 3 Iowa State in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series, where they lost 89-80 on Thursday.
Brock Harding kicked off the game with a three-pointer, but the Privateers quickly took the lead at 4-3 after consecutive layups by MJ Thomas and James White. Freeman swiftly responded with a layup of his own, and with contributions from Payton Sandfort and Drew Thelwell, who each sank a three-pointer, Iowa forged ahead and established a commanding 10-0 run to lead 29-11 midway through the first half.
Iowa’s shooting was impressive throughout the game, finishing with a field goal percentage of 62.7%, as they made 42 of 67 attempts, including 14 of 29 from three-point range. They also registered an outstanding 28 assists on their 42 made baskets. Sandfort had a productive outing, hitting 3 of 4 from beyond the arc for a total of 15 points, along with five rebounds, four assists, and one steal. Both Josh Dix and Brock Harding contributed 13 points each; Harding also recorded six assists, two steals, and a block. Pryce Sandfort added 10 points coming off the bench.
On the other hand, New Orleans, which returned from a week-long break from competition, struggled with their shooting, hitting 25 of 67 shots for a 37.3% success rate, and converting only 4 of 24 attempts from three-point range. James White led the Privateers (2-7) with 24 points, along with six rebounds and two assists, while MJ Thomas scored 14 points.
