PSG solidifies top position in French league after 3-1 victory over Lyon, overshadowed by homophobic slurs

PARIS — Paris Saint-Germain extended their lead at the top of the French league table with an uncontested 3-1 victory over Lyon on Sunday. The match, held at the Parc des Princes, was briefly disrupted due to incidents of homophobic chanting coming from the stands.

PSG got off to an explosive start, quickly establishing a 2-0 lead within the first 14 minutes. Ousmane Dembélé struck the first goal, followed by Vitinha converting a penalty to add to the scoreline. Lyon, determined to respond, gained momentum as the first half progressed, with Georges Mikautadze finding the net to reduce the deficit just before halftime.

The second half saw PSG reasserting their dominance, with Gonzalo Ramos cementing the win by scoring in the 88th minute through a deft finish from close range. With this victory, PSG moved seven points ahead of second-place Marseille and Monaco, who both had disappointing draws on Saturday. Lyon, meanwhile, remained in fifth place, trailing the leaders by 12 points.

The referee, Benoît Bastien, was compelled to halt the match in the 53rd minute as the homophobic chants echoed throughout the stadium. In response, PSG’s captain Achraf Hakimi appealed to the fans in the Auteuil stand to cease their behavior. Following this, a message was broadcast on the stadium’s large screens reminding supporters that such discriminatory conduct is not tolerated. After a brief pause, the match resumed.

In another notable match, Brest celebrated a perfect week by following their 1-0 Champions League triumph over PSV with a resounding 4-1 victory against Nantes in the French league. Substitute Abdallah Sima made a substantial impact by scoring two goals, complementing earlier efforts from Kamory Doumbia and Brendan Chardonnet that gave Brest a commanding 2-0 lead at halftime. Douglas Augusto managed to score for Nantes, but it was not enough to turn the tide.

Brest, which finished third in the last season’s league to secure the final automatic Champions League spot for French clubs, had struggled in their domestic performances this season, suffering four losses in five previous league matches. They currently sit in 11th place, just one point behind Reims, while Nantes holds the 14th position.

Meanwhile, Nice faced a challenging away match at Montpellier, ending in a 2-2 draw despite twice taking the lead. After suffering a late defeat in their Europa League encounter, Nice’s inability to secure a win meant they remained in sixth place, falling six points behind Marseille and Monaco. Montpellier, who sit at the bottom of the league, had their share of missed opportunities, particularly in the final ten minutes.

The contest at Stade de La Mosson was marked by excitement and numerous attempts on goal, with a combined total of 38 scoring chances. Defender Theo Sainte-Luce, returning from a lengthy injury hiatus, equalized for Montpellier in the 80th minute and almost scored again shortly after, but his effort went wide. Reflecting on the return to the pitch, Sainte-Luce expressed that after enduring tough times, such recognition felt rewarding.

Additionally, in other matches, Rennes achieved a 2-0 victory over Angers, while Strasbourg enjoyed a commanding 3-0 win against Le Havre.
