DENVER — On Saturday, a vibrant plane took to the skies from Denver, bringing excitement as the pilot revealed the day’s enchanting destination: the North Pole.

Over 100 children, many battling serious health conditions, were invited aboard for a delightful 45-minute journey that showcased the festive spirit of the season. Upon returning to Denver International Airport, the plane was escorted to a specially decorated hangar, transformed into a whimsical representation of the North Pole by employees and volunteers from United Airlines.

The aircraft was adorned with colorful streamers, paper snowflakes, and fluffy cotton to mimic snow, creating a festive atmosphere. Flight attendants delighted the children by bringing a bubble machine down the aisle, prompting enthusiastic cheers of “bubbles, bubbles, bubbles.” The background was filled with holiday music, while passengers enjoyed apple snacks and juice.

As the flight neared its conclusion, the children were instructed to close their window shades. When they reopened them, they were greeted by the sight of Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, and a lively group of elves waiting below. An ice cream truck added to the festive ambiance, and every child was presented with a gift.

Six-year-old Bryce Bosley expressed his joy, saying, “The North Pole is fun because there’s games, food, and all the activities are really fun.” His sentiments reflected the holiday cheer radiating among the young passengers.

Captain Bob Zimmermann, who piloted the special flight, found the experience deeply impactful. He shared, “Throughout the year, I’ll think of the fantasy flight. When life seems to get tough or I want to complain, I remember these kids and the joy and love of what this feels like. It just keeps my life in perspective.”

United Airlines collaborated with various organizations, including Make-A-Wish Colorado, Girls Inc., Children’s Hospital Colorado, and the Rocky Mountain Down Syndrome Association, to invite children aged 3 to 10 to participate in this magical flight.

This annual event, known as “fantasy flights,” has been a cherished tradition for over 30 years, offering holiday joy to children and their families at various airports worldwide. This year’s festivities took place in 13 different cities, spanning from Honolulu to Washington, Houston, Los Angeles, as well as international locations like London, Tokyo, and beyond. Notably, Newark, New Jersey, also hosted a flight on the same day.

Jonna McGrath, United’s vice president of operations at the Denver hub, has been involved in 29 of these flights and expressed how meaningful the event is to her. Dressed as an elf, she remarked, “It gives them a day where they are away from some of the challenges they face in their day-to-day life. Bringing a little magic and some gifts to their holiday season is something they’ll never forget.”
