DETROIT — Jeff Petry registered his first two goals of the season, while Ville Husso recorded 23 saves, securing his first victory in over a year, as the Detroit Red Wings triumphed over the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 on Saturday evening.

Petry’s scoring drought ended, having last found the net on April 11 against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Last season, after being traded from Montreal, he managed only three goals across 73 games.

Husso’s last win prior to this match was on December 12 of the previous season, entering this game with a record of 0-4-2 in his recent outings.

The Red Wings had goals from Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond, the latter sealing the game with an empty-netter, marking his impressive tally of 10 goals in the last 12 games. This victory only marked the Red Wings’ second win in their last eight games.

For the Maple Leafs, Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies each found the net, while Joseph Woll made 22 saves.

Highlighting the takeaways from the match: the Maple Leafs, usually recognized as one of the league’s more prolific offensive teams, have struggled recently, facing a stretch of six games in which they scored three or fewer goals.

For the Red Wings, their goaltending situation has placed Husso as the de facto third-string goalie this season, having even spent time in the American Hockey League, yet he continues to play due to injuries sustained by Cam Talbot and Alex Lyon.

A pivotal moment in the game occurred when Petry’s second goal at 1:51 in the third period shifted the score to 3-2 in Detroit’s favor, happening merely 44 seconds after Knies had tied the game. Petry capitalized on a rebound from a shot taken by J.T. Compher, marking the ninth time in his career that the 37-year-old defenseman has scored multiple goals in a game.

As an interesting statistic, Matthews boasts 18 goals and a total of 33 points in 25 career games against the Red Wings.

Looking ahead, the Maple Leafs will host the Buffalo Sabres in the second part of a back-to-back matchup on Sunday evening, while the Red Wings will welcome the Philadelphia Flyers to their arena on Wednesday night.
