WOLVERHAMPTON, England — Tensions reached a boiling point for the Wolverhampton team as they faced chaotic post-match scenes for the second consecutive time in the Premier League.
Following their 2-1 defeat against Ipswich on Saturday, which marked their fourth straight loss, arguments erupted among the players on the field.
Defender Rayan Ait-Nouri received a second yellow card after the match concluded and was escorted off the pitch by teammate Craig Dawson. Meanwhile, Matheus Cunha, the Brazilian striker who netted Wolves’ only goal, found himself tangled in the disagreements as well.
In another clash, Wolves midfielder Mario Lemina was involved in a confrontation with West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen during their 2-1 defeat at the Olympic Stadium on Monday. This incident escalated when Lemina also exchanged words with a member of his own coaching staff. Recently, he had been relieved of his captaincy amid the turmoil.
“The atmosphere in the dressing room is strained at the moment,” said Wolverhampton’s midfielder Tommy Doyle on Saturday. “It’s crucial for us to be honest and identify the reasons behind our inability to secure three points. We need to engage in open discussions.”
The pressure on manager Gary O’Neil heightened after the latest loss, which left Wolverhampton in second-to-last position, four points adrift from safety.
“We are feeling a significant amount of pressure,” O’Neil acknowledged. “I comprehend the emotions from the players, but we must strive for better control.”
O’Neil stated that he would address the Ait-Nouri incident internally to maintain team cohesion.
