SEOUL, South Korea – The head of South Korea’s ruling political party has emphasized the need to suspend the constitutional powers held by President Yoon Suk Yeol.

These remarks from Han Dong-hun, the leader of the People Power Party, were made on Friday and indicate a potential shift in the party’s stance. It appears they are reconsidering their prior resistance to the idea of impeaching President Yoon following his recent declaration of martial law.

Earlier this week, the main opposition group, the Democratic Party, along with several smaller opposition parties, took action by submitting a joint proposal to initiate impeachment proceedings against Yoon. This move occurred on Wednesday, directly in response to his announcement of martial law the night before. The martial law itself was brief, lasting only about six hours, as the National Assembly moved swiftly to countermand the president’s declaration, leading to the lifting of the emergency measures before dawn on Wednesday.
