LOS ANGELES — The rivalry among the four promising pass rushers on the Los Angeles Rams’ defensive line is well-known, but this week introduced a different kind of contest.

Defensive tackle Braden Fiske was honored with the NFL’s defensive rookie of the month award on Thursday. However, he had to share this achievement with nose tackle Kobie Turner, who captivated audiences as one of the final contestants on Fox’s “The Masked Singer.”

Fiske, Turner, and fellow edge rushers Jared Verse and Byron Young motivate each other as they form the next generation of the Rams’ defense. They frequently compare statistics, such as their impressive combined total of 21 1/2 sacks this season, as well as their skills on the basketball court, each aiming to outshine the other with a competitive yet friendly spirit.

When Turner revealed his identity on television following his elimination, the camaraderie among the defensive line was palpable.

“It really took me by surprise,” Fiske remarked with amusement. “We saw the news in our group chat last night, and it was trending on social media. Given who Kobie is, it’s really special. I know this meant a lot to him and his family, especially with his musical background. I’m thrilled he got that chance. Singing isn’t really my strong suit, though!”

Fiske also received accolades for his stellar performance, wrapping up November with five sacks. As a second-round draft pick, he has emerged as one of the top young interior pass rushers alongside Turner. Notably, Fiske is the third member of the Rams’ young defensive unit to achieve the defensive rookie of the month accolade in the last two seasons, following Verse in September 2024 and Turner in December 2023.

Meanwhile, Turner has also been making waves in the entertainment sphere with his impressive vocal abilities. He has showcased his talent by singing the national anthem at Lakers and Kings games and enjoys adding a flair to his post-sack celebrations by mimicking a conductor with an imaginary orchestra.

Balancing music and athletics has always been a part of Turner’s life, as he managed both choral and weightlifting classes throughout high school and college. However, participating in “The Masked Singer” brought a unique challenge of performing while encased in a heavy costume.

“Being under that mask and expressing the silly, fun part of myself was unexpected,” Turner shared. He humorously admitted to falling asleep onstage during a break in filming, exacerbated by the heaviness of his costume due to his athletic build.

Turner’s journey to the show began with his marketing agent’s initiative, and he recorded his first episode during the Rams’ organized team activities last summer, but had to keep it under wraps until this week.

“Once I finished recording, it was back to football,” Turner said. “When the show aired this fall, my excitement grew.”

Despite not making it to the finale, Turner voiced his frustration, highlighting his competitive spirit even in performances outside of football. However, he always manages to infuse fun into his activities.

“There are expectations on how to act on the field, but my personality pushes those boundaries,” Turner noted. “Last year, Aaron Donald used to tease me about my wild dance moves during walkthroughs. But when it’s time to play, I’m completely focused.”

NOTES: Verse was limited in practice on Thursday due to an ankle injury. Left tackle Alaric Jackson made a limited return after missing practice Wednesday with a foot issue. Wide receiver Demarcus Robinson participated fully Thursday after being limited the previous day, while quarterback Matthew Stafford also completed his second straight full practice, recovering from an ankle injury.
