BARCELONA, Spain — The Spanish football club Barcelona has recently introduced its new mascot, a large yellow feline known as “Cat,” to commemorate its 125th anniversary.
This lively character made a joyful entrance on the pitch at Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium prior to the match against Las Palmas in the Spanish league on Saturday, which saw the visitors triumph with a score of 2-1.
Dressed in the distinctive burgundy and blue colors of Barcelona, this mascot features an open mouth showcasing a soccer ball design that mirrors the club’s emblem.
The choice of name not only emphasizes Barcelona’s prominent status in Catalonia, Spain’s northeastern region, but also honors the local culture. The four red stripes adorning its forehead symbolize the Catalan regional flag, further connecting the mascot to the team’s heritage.
“Cat” was officially introduced at a gala event celebrating the anniversary on Friday. The club describes the mascot as a “friendly, positive kitty” dedicated to the sport of football while also promoting the diverse range of activities that embody FC Barcelona’s multi-sport philosophy, which includes both men’s and women’s, professional and amateur sports.
Beyond its renowned women’s soccer team, Barcelona also participates in various other sports disciplines such as basketball, handball, indoor soccer, and roller hockey, showcasing its commitment to a multifaceted sporting spirit.
This new mascot replaces “Clam,” which was created for the club’s centennial celebration and serves as a refreshingly vibrant addition to Barcelona’s rich history.
