LUSAIL, Qatar — McLaren is on the brink of securing its first Formula 1 constructors’ championship in 26 years, following a remarkable performance in the sprint race at the Qatar Grand Prix on Saturday, where Lando Norris helped Oscar Piastri achieve a one-two result for the team.
Norris began the race from pole position, maintaining his lead right from the start, while Piastri cleverly maneuvered past George Russell from Mercedes to claim second place. As they approached the finish line, Norris, showing sportsmanship, allowed Piastri to take the lead, a gesture in return for Piastri’s earlier support that led Norris to success in Brazil while he was entangled in a championship battle with Max Verstappen. Russell ultimately secured third place in this race.
Verstappen, who had just been crowned the drivers’ champion the previous week in Las Vegas, finished in eighth position. His Red Bull teammate, Sergio Perez, struggled with his car and ended the race in last place after needing to change his car’s nose during a pit stop.
All eyes are now on the qualifying sessions that are set to take place later on Saturday, leading up to the main Grand Prix event on Sunday.
