LONDON — Rupert Grint, renowned for his role as Ron Weasley in the “Harry Potter” series, is now facing a substantial financial obligation amounting to £1.8 million (approximately $2.3 million) following a legal dispute with the British tax authorities.

The situation stems from a ruling made by H.M. Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in 2019, which came after an examination of Grint’s tax returns that dated back seven years.

HMRC determined that Grint had incorrectly reported £4.5 million in residuals from his film work, which encompass earnings from DVD sales, streaming rights, and television syndication. He classified these funds as a capital asset rather than as income, leading to a higher tax burden.

Grint’s legal team sought to contest the agency’s decision; however, after prolonged legal proceedings, a tribunal judge ultimately ruled in favor of the tax department this week. In her judgment, Judge Harriet Morgan stated that the income Grint reported was primarily generated from his own actions and should thus be taxed as earnings.

Now 36 years old, Grint was part of the full span of the eight “Harry Potter” films released from 2001 to 2011 and is estimated to have garnered around £24 million from his iconic role.

This is not the first legal setback for Grint, as he has previously faced a separate court ruling regarding a tax refund of £1 million in 2019 that also did not go his way.
