PHILADELPHIA — On Wednesday, Vice President Kamala Harris made a visit to Philadelphia’s Famous 4th Street Deli, a well-known spot favored by politicians and locals alike, where conversations about politics often take center stage alongside iconic delis.
Harris’s visit comes as she prepares for a CNN town hall scheduled for 9 p.m. EDT, with her upcoming election against former Republican President Donald Trump fast approaching in less than two weeks. The Famous 4th Street Deli, established in 1923, has gained fame for its generously portioned sandwiches, along with its commitment to traditional methods like smoking pastrami, pickling corned beef, and brining pickles.
Inside the bustling deli, Harris interacted with a crowd of enthusiastic “super volunteers,” while Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker was also present. The Vice President took a moment to snap selfies with several supporters and Parker. Responding to one man’s optimistic exclamation, “We’re gonna win,” Harris echoed his sentiment with, “We are.”
Later, she addressed the larger gathering with a touch of superstition, stating, “Knock wood, God willing, we are going to win,” signifying her hopes for the upcoming election. Harris expressed her commitment to fostering unity, emphasizing that community building and cooperation are essential to overcoming divisions.
Since the 1970s, it has been a tradition for politicians to visit this deli on Election Day, enjoying not only lunch but also the camaraderie with supporters and the media. Harris eventually signed an order sheet and collected a to-go bag that included a pastrami sandwich on rye and a slice of German chocolate cake, a true classic from the deli.
