VIENNA — Alexander Zverev secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the Erste Bank Open after defeating Marcos Giron with a score of 6-2, 7-5 on Wednesday. This victory marks a personal milestone for the German player, recording his 61st win of the year, a new personal best.
As the third-ranked player and the top seed in this indoor hard-court competition held in Austria, Zverev is set to face Lorenzo Musetti next. Musetti advanced to this stage following Gael Monfils’ withdrawal from their second-round matchup due to an illness.
Prior to this season, Zverev’s highest number of wins in a single year was 60 victories back in 2018, highlighting his impressive performance this time around.
In other matches, Grigor Dimitrov triumphed over Zhang Zhizhen with a score of 6-4, 7-5. The third-seeded Bulgarian is slated to compete against Tomas Machac on Thursday for a chance to reach the quarterfinals.
Additionally, both Brandon Nakashima and Karen Khachanov also progressed in the tournament on Wednesday, contributing to an action-packed day of tennis in Vienna.
