SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Sharks have placed their promising rookie, Macklin Celebrini, on the injured reserve as of Saturday due to a lower-body injury.

This decision comes just two days after Celebrini made a noteworthy entrance to the NHL, contributing a goal and an assist in a close overtime match against the St. Louis Blues.

At only 18 years old, Celebrini was selected as the first overall pick in the NHL Draft held in June, and he is considered a vital part of the Sharks’ rebuilding efforts.

Unfortunately, he faced some setbacks during the preseason from a similar lower-body issue. Coach Ryan Warsofsky indicated that Celebrini’s recovery will be monitored on a week-to-week basis.

In his debut, Celebrini achieved a remarkable feat, becoming the youngest player in NHL history to accumulate two points within the first period of a game, reaching this milestone at the age of 18 years and 119 days.

He surpassed the previous record, held by Shane Doan, who managed this at 18 years and 362 days while playing for Winnipeg against Dallas in 1995.

Celebrini’s goal came just 7:01 into the game, marking him as the second-fastest player to score in their debut as a No. 1 overall pick, a record only surpassed by Mario Lemieux’s goal 2:59 into his debut against Boston on October 11, 1984.

Last season, Celebrini had an impressive performance with 64 points in 38 games while playing as a freshman at Boston University, ultimately earning the Hobey Baker Award, which recognizes the top collegiate hockey player.

As the Sharks navigate this latest setback, fans remain hopeful that Celebrini will return to the ice soon and continue to be a key player in their strategy moving forward.
