A woman from Minnesota was sentenced to 20 years in prison for her involvement in the 2019 New Year’s Eve killing of a Minneapolis real estate agent. Elsa Segura pleaded guilty to kidnapping to commit great bodily harm or terrorize as part of a deal with prosecutors related to the death of Monique Baugh, according to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office. Segura had previously been convicted of murder and other charges in 2021, but the Minnesota Supreme Court overturned the verdict this year, citing erroneous jury instructions. This plea agreement allows Segura to avoid a second trial.
Prosecutors revealed that Segura enticed Baugh to a fake home showing in the suburb of Maple Grove, where Baugh was abducted. Baugh was subsequently discovered fatally shot in a Minneapolis alley in the early hours of 2020. Authorities believe that she was murdered as part of a convoluted revenge plot against Baugh’s boyfriend, Jon Mitchell-Momoh, a musician who had a falling out with former business associate Lyndon Akeem Wiggins—also a drug dealer and Segura’s romantic partner. Wiggins purportedly viewed Mitchell-Momoh as a snitch and was involved in the incident. Mitchell-Momoh was also shot in front of the couple’s young children, aged 1 and 3 at the time, but he survived the attack.
The state Supreme Court similarly nullified Wiggins’ conviction this year due to flawed jury instructions. The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office confirmed on Tuesday that Wiggins is being held in the county jail and is set to face a new trial.
While the state Supreme Court upheld the convictions of two other individuals accused of kidnapping Baugh, Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill sentenced all four defendants to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case surrounding the tragic events of Baugh’s murder continues to unfold in the Minnesota judicial system.
