Kevin Long, a former running back at South Carolina and a draft pick for the New York Jets, has passed away at the age of 69. His death was confirmed by the university. Long, who played for the Gamecocks from 1973-1976, was the first running back in the program’s history to exceed 1,000 rushing yards in a single season, accomplishing 1,133 yards in 1975. He holds the tenth spot on the school’s all-time rushing list with a total of 2,372 yards. Long is also recognized in the university’s athletic Hall of Fame and the South Carolina Hall of Fame.
The cause of Long’s death was not specified. After being selected by the New York Jets in the seventh round of the 1977 NFL draft, Long played with the team for five seasons, accumulating 2,190 rushing yards, 25 touchdowns, 74 receptions for 539 yards, and three touchdowns. He later concluded his football career in the USFL.
