Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Merrill Kelly had to exit the game against the Texas Rangers during the fifth inning after throwing a pitch. The incident occurred when Kelly walked the first batter in the fifth inning and winced in pain after throwing a pitch to Marcus Simien. He appeared to be trying to stretch out his back, leading to Arizona’s trainer and manager Torey Lovullo visiting him on the mound. Kelly had a history of dealing with cramps in previous games at Chase Field and had recently returned from the 60-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation on August 11th. Prior to leaving the game against the Rangers, Kelly, who was 4-0 since returning to the rotation, had given up two runs on four hits.
