CONMEBOL, the South American soccer body, has handed down suspensions to several Uruguayan players following incidents that occurred during the Copa America semi-final against Colombia in July. Darwin Núñez, a striker for Liverpool, will be sidelined for five Uruguay matches, including upcoming World Cup qualifying games. Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur received a four-match ban, while Mathías Olivera, Ronald Araújo, and José Maria Giménez will miss three games each. All players involved were also fined, with Núñez facing a $20,000 penalty, Bentancur $16,000, and Olivera, Araujo, and Giménez $12,000 each. Additionally, seven other Uruguayan players were fined $5,000 each for their involvement in the incident.
The altercation took place at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, where Uruguay players were reportedly involved in a physical altercation with fans following their 1-0 loss to Colombia. Giménez explained to reporters that the team’s actions were aimed at protecting their families from Colombian supporters.
