The Dodgers are making history early—and Mookie Betts is right at the center of it.
On a night already buzzing with energy from their 2024 World Series ring ceremony, the Los Angeles Dodgers delivered more fireworks. With a game-winning, three-run walk-off home run by Mookie Betts in the bottom of the 10th inning, the Dodgers defeated the Detroit Tigers 8–5 on Friday night at Dodger Stadium, improving to 4–0 for the first time since 1981—the same year they went on to win the World Series.
This latest dramatic win proves that the Dodgers, already one of MLB’s powerhouse teams, have no plans of slowing down.
Before the first pitch was thrown, Dodgers fans were already on their feet. The team received their 2024 World Series championship rings in a glittering on-field ceremony. Walking a blue carpet laid across the infield, players were handed iconic blue boxes holding the rings that symbolize last season’s triumph over the New York Yankees.
But while the past was being honored, the present proved just as electric.

Betts’ heroics scored Will Smith and Shohei Ohtani, who both reached earlier in the inning, and capped off a rollercoaster of a game that saw the lead change multiple times in the late innings.

Detroit’s Dillon Dingler, making his presence felt, homered off Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the second inning to give the Tigers a 1–0 lead. It was a strong start for Detroit, especially against one of the Dodgers’ most promising arms.
Betts gave fans a preview of what was to come when he belted a solo home run in the bottom of the 8th, giving the Dodgers a 3–2 lead. It looked like that might be enough to seal the win—until Detroit came fighting back.
Manuel Margot tied the game with a clutch RBI single in the top of the ninth. The Tigers nearly took the lead completely, but a controversial call at home plate was overturned on replay, keeping the game tied at 3–3 and setting the stage for extra innings.
Dingler wasn’t done. He smashed a triple to left field that Dodgers outfielder Michael Conforto misplayed, allowing Riley Greene and Zach McKinstry to score. Detroit took a 5–3 lead and looked poised to steal the win on the road.
The Dodgers weren’t going down quietly. Conforto made up for his miscue with a ground-rule double, cutting the Tigers’ lead to 5–4. Then came Betts—and the rest is history.
Lost in the late-game fireworks was an incredible performance by starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The right-hander delivered a career-high 10 strikeouts, keeping the Tigers off balance for much of the night.
Yamamoto is quickly proving why he was one of the most highly anticipated pitching acquisitions of the season. While he gave up the early homer to Dingler, his ability to settle in and miss bats is exactly what the Dodgers need if they hope to repeat in 2025.
The Dodgers offense wasn’t all Betts. Freddie Freeman also played a big role in the comeback, tying the game at 2–2 earlier with a two-run home run off Detroit starter Jack Flaherty. Freeman continues to be a model of consistency in the Dodgers’ lineup, providing both leadership and power.
For Tigers pitcher Jack Flaherty, the night was a bittersweet homecoming. A native of Burbank, California, Flaherty received a standing ovation from the Dodgers faithful when he exited the game in the sixth. He was a key part of the Dodgers’ 2024 World Series run, starting Game 1 of both the NLCS and World Series.
Though he now wears a different uniform, the respect and appreciation from the L.A. crowd were undeniable. Flaherty is expected to receive his World Series ring before Saturday’s series finale.
One of the most dramatic moments of the night came in the top of the ninth, when Margot tried to score what could’ve been the go-ahead run for the Tigers. Initially called safe at the plate, the call was overturned on review, denying Detroit the lead.
In a game that featured so many twists, this overturned call may have been the most critical. Had the run stood, Betts’ walk-off might never have happened.
With this victory, the Dodgers improved to 4–0 for the first time since 1981. That year, they rode their hot start all the way to a World Series championship.
