Traditional Carnival in Sao Paulo Unites Families and Revelers

In the quaint town of Sao Luiz do Paraitinga, Brazil, the tranquility of everyday life gives way to an exuberant celebration during Carnival. Known for its cherished traditions, the town becomes a lively stage for jubilation with its iconic giant puppets and the unique musical tradition known as ‘marchinhas.’
Contrary to the grandeur of Carnival in Brazil’s metropolises like Rio de Janeiro, characterized by illustrious samba school parades and distinctive, themed street parties, the Carnival in Sao Luiz do Paraitinga offers a more intimate setting. Thousands of celebrants, including residents and tourists, fill the picturesque streets of this Sao Paulo countryside town, reveling in traditional Carnival melodies.
“It’s the state’s best celebration,” expressed Dayana Martins Galan, adding, “It embodies the classic Carnival spirit.”
Nestled amid verdant hills, the charming town of Sao Luiz do Paraitinga boasts a population of around 10,000. Its colorful colonial architecture and rich cultural activities year-round make it a beloved destination.
Among its many visitors is Gheisa Gomes, who used to commute from her home in Guarulhos to enjoy the festivities until she paused for motherhood. This year, though, she brought her young daughter to join the vibrant celebration.
“It’s family-friendly and serene,” emphasized Gomes. “Here, my daughter can dance and soak in the essence of Carnival culture, which I find delightful.”
In contrast, the streets of larger Brazilian cities like Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro swarm with festivity, often featuring revelers in daring outfits amid bustling street vendors catering to their thirst with drinks and spirits.
Although these metropolises also feature Carnival marches, the soulful ‘marchinhas’ rarely take the spotlight. However, in Sao Luiz do Paraitinga, they become the heart of the celebration.
“Everyone should experience this,” declared Marcela Antunes Ceneviva, advocating the revival of these traditions. “It’s more rooted in the past, and that makes it invaluable.”
