ROME – Lautaro Martinez struck late in the match to secure a 1-0 victory for Inter Milan against Genoa, propelling them temporarily to the top of the Serie A standings on Saturday.
The Argentine forward capitalized on a corner, heading the ball that deflected off a defender’s chest, ultimately breaking the stalemate at the San Siro.
Following his goal, Martinez celebrated by climbing onto a security fence to revel with the Inter fans.
This victory placed Inter one point ahead of Napoli, coached by Antonio Conte, who could regain the lead with a win against Como on Sunday.
The upcoming weekend will see Inter face Napoli in what promises to be an exciting matchup.
Meanwhile, AC Milan’s situation worsened after their early exit from the Champions League, as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Torino.
The match began poorly for Milan, with Malick Thiaw inadvertently scoring an own goal just five minutes in, when a clearance from goalkeeper Mike Maignan ricocheted off Thiaw into the net.
United States player Christian Pulisic faced a setback, failing to convert a penalty kick for the first time in his career.
His attempt was saved by Torino’s goalkeeper, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who dove to push the ball away.
Impressively, Milinkovic-Savic has now saved four out of the five penalties he has faced this season.
Though Milan’s Joao Felix struck the post, Tijjani Reijnders managed to equalize with a goal in the 74th minute.
However, just two minutes later, Torino regained the lead through a quick shot from Gvidas Gineitis, which surprised the Milan defense following a free kick.
As a result of this loss, Milan remains in seventh place, while Torino climbs to the 11th position.
It is worth noting that just four days prior, Milan was ousted from the Champions League by Feyenoord, concluding the tie with a 2-1 aggregate scoreline.
In other matches, Parma enjoyed a successful debut for coach Cristian Chivu, winning 2-0 against regional rival Bologna.
Meanwhile, fourth-place Lazio faced struggles as they were held to a goalless draw at Venezia, a team currently battling relegation.
