TAMPA, Fla. — A look at the transformation of some key players’ hairstyles before and after they became members of the New York Yankees reveals interesting changes, often influenced by team culture and expectations.
Reggie Jackson, one of the iconic figures in Yankees history, played with the Oakland Athletics from 1968 to 1975. During his time with the A’s, which embraced a distinct look encouraged by owner Charles O. Finley, Jackson sported a beard at certain points. It was only after joining the Yankees for the 1977 season that he transitioned to a more polished appearance, aligning with the franchise’s standards.
Randy Johnson was acquired from the Seattle Mariners prior to the 2005 season. Upon his arrival for spring training, he notably trimmed his long, shoulder-length hair and showed up clean-shaven. This prompted an enthusiastic welcome from Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who expressed his approval by stating, “Glad you’re here. Glad you’re cleaned up, and glad you’re here.”
Johnny Damon, known for his signature long hair, beard, and mustache during his tenure with the Boston Red Sox, underwent a significant makeover when he donned the Yankees uniform from 2006 to 2008. After leaving New York, he didn’t revert to his former long-haired look and instead maintained a shorter beard during his last three seasons in the Major Leagues.
Jason Giambi’s style changed dramatically throughout his career as well. He was known for his goatee and beard when he played with the Athletics from 1995 to 2001. However, upon joining the Yankees, he opted for a clean-shaven look. Interestingly, when he made a return to Oakland in 2009, he regrew his facial hair.
Andrew McCutchen underwent a personal transformation when he was traded to the Yankees on August 21, 2018. In a touching moment, he shaved his beard while his young son watched, who curiously touched his face and appeared to accept the change, according to McCutchen.
Gerrit Cole’s appearance also evolved after joining the Yankees for the 2020 season. Previously with the Houston Astros, he had a beard and longer hair, but he made a shift to a neater look with the Yankees. While his hair initially remained long enough to curl around his neck, by 2024 and even more so in the current year, it has been kept shorter.
These hairstyles are more than just a fashion statement; they reflect the players’ transitions into one of the most storied franchises in baseball history.
