Funeral service conducted for two Detroit children who perished in the cold as family receives assurance of housing

DETROIT — A local organization has come forward to secure housing for the surviving family members of two Detroit children who tragically lost their lives in a freezing cold van parked in a casino garage, according to officials.

A memorial service was held for Darnell Currie Jr., aged 9, and his 2-year-old sister, A’millah Currie, who were part of a larger group that included five children and two adults in a van that ceased to produce heat during an exceptionally cold spell on February 10.

“It really hits hard; it makes you want to break down because this could be any child, just like yours,” expressed Jessica Wiggins, a visitor at the funeral home on Wednesday.

Authorities indicated that the family had been living in that vehicle for several months. Mayor Mike Duggan disclosed that the children’s mother had reached out to a housing hotline in November but, unfortunately, did not receive the assistance she needed. He has urged for a complete review regarding the city’s interactions with the family during that time.

Deputy Mayor Melia Howard announced that a community organization has decided to cover a year’s worth of rent to provide stable housing for the family.

“It’s really vital for me to convey to them that we’re here to support them beyond just today. We will be here for as long as they require us,” Howard shared while in tears, addressing attendees at the funeral home.
