FA Cup to introduce semi-automated offside technology in English soccer for the first time

LONDON — For the first time, English soccer is set to implement semi-automated offside technology during the fifth round of the FA Cup, which commences in early March. This advancement in technology, which employs artificial intelligence to track player movements, had initially been scheduled for a debut in the Premier League following an international break at the start of the season. However, its introduction faced delays due to complications encountered during the testing phase.

Recently, following notable progress, Premier League chief executive Tony Scholes announced that the technology will be showcased in the FA Cup as it enters the last-16 stage. The Football Association indicated that this technology will be utilized in seven of the eight matches taking place from March 1-2.

According to the FA, “Semi-automated offside technology will provide more efficient placement of the virtual offside line, based on optical player tracking, and produce virtual graphics that will enhance the in-stadium experience as well as the broadcast for fans.” Additionally, they noted that while the technology does not alter the fundamental accuracy of the decisions made, it significantly improves the speed and efficiency of the overall process.

Officials from the Premier League have expressed optimism that this new system could shorten the average time required to determine offside calls by around 31 seconds. The FA has also stated that the Premier League plans to adopt this technology later in the current season after observing its effectiveness during the FA Cup matches.

Notably, this semi-automated offside technology was first utilized in a men’s World Cup during the Qatar tournament in 2022, marking a significant leap forward in officiating technology in soccer.
