NEW YORK — The nominees for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2025 have been announced, featuring a diverse group of artists, including Mariah Carey, Chubby Checker, Cyndi Lauper, OutKast, and Phish. The nomination list also highlights the Black Crowes and Oasis, two sets of brothers known for their turbulent past and recent reconciliations.
The Hall of Fame unveiled a total of 14 performer nominees, which includes notable names like Bad Company, Joe Cocker, Billy Idol, Joy Division/New Order, Maná, Soundgarden, and the White Stripes. Among these nominees, eight are appearing on the ballot for the very first time: Bad Company, the Black Crowes, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Billy Idol, Maná, OutKast, and Phish.
Carey and Checker stand out this year due to their significant influence on music and culture. Carey boasts an impressive record of 19 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, while Checker is renowned for his iconic songs “The Twist” and “Let’s Twist Again,” which are celebrated as some of the biggest hits in rock history.
Oasis, a powerful British band of the 1990s, is best known for timeless tracks like “Wonderwall” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger.” Their dynamic sound featured memorable rock choruses alongside the intense relationship between guitarist Noel Gallagher and his brother Liam, who served as the band’s vocalist.
On the American side, the Black Crowes have been known for their blend of Southern rock, blues, and glam rock, starting with their acclaimed debut album, “Shake Your Money Maker.” The relationship between singer Chris Robinson and his brother, guitarist Rich Robinson, has seen its share of ups and downs, with a notable period of silence between them. Following their nomination, the band shared a message on their Instagram, stating simply, “Humbled.”
Lauper gained fame in the 1980s with classic hits like “Time After Time” and “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” She further solidified her legacy by winning a Tony Award for her work on “Kinky Boots.” OutKast, consisting of André 3000 and Big Boi, has built a reputation in hip-hop with six Grammy Awards and a legacy of innovative music.
The 2025 inductees will be announced in late April, along with honorees receiving recognition under three special categories: Musical Influence, Musical Excellence, and the Ahmet Ertegun Non-Performer Award. To be eligible, artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to their nomination. The induction ceremony is set to take place in Los Angeles during the fall.
More than 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals will cast their votes for the nominees. Selection considerations include an artist’s influence on their peers, the breadth and longevity of their career, and their innovation and artistic excellence.
In the previous year, notable inductees included Mary J. Blige, Cher, Foreigner, A Tribe Called Quest, Kool & The Gang, Ozzy Osbourne, the Dave Matthews Band, and singer-guitarist Peter Frampton.
