COLUMBUS, Ohio — In a thrilling finish, Bruce Thornton sank a 3-pointer from the right wing with just 7.4 seconds remaining, leading Ohio State to a remarkable comeback victory over No. 18 Maryland with a final score of 73-70 on Thursday night.

Thornton was the standout player for the Buckeyes, scoring 31 points while also contributing six assists and five rebounds. His exceptional performance helped Ohio State push their record to 14-9 overall and 6-6 in the Big Ten Conference. Additionally, Micah Parrish supported the team with 13 points and six rebounds.

On the other side, Maryland was led by Julian Reese, who recorded 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. He was backed by Rodney Rice, who added 18 points, and Derik Queen, who scored 13. The Terrapins had been riding a four-game winning streak prior to this matchup.

Despite starting strong, shooting 59% in the first half, Maryland struggled in the second half, managing only 25% from the field. The defeat was particularly tough as it interrupted their momentum after a successful stretch of victories.

Ohio State entered the game needing crucial wins to bolster their chances during the NCAA tournament selection process. This victory certainly adds value to their resume, especially considering the absence of 7-foot-1 center Aaron Bradshaw, who was sidelined due to illness. This game marked a stark contrast to their previous encounter from December 4, when Maryland dominated Ohio State with a 40-point victory, ending that game 83-59.

A pivotal moment in the game occurred when Maryland’s Ja’Kobi Gillespie tied the score at 70 with a drive to the basket with 35.5 seconds left on the clock. Thornton then showcased his composure by holding the ball before making the decisive shot, sealing the win for Ohio State.

In the final seven minutes, Thornton was particularly impressive, scoring 17 of his total points and helping the Buckeyes outscore the Terrapins 23-9 during that crucial stretch.

Looking ahead, both teams are scheduled to compete again on Sunday. Maryland will be hosting Rutgers, while Ohio State is set to visit Nebraska.
