ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rays have completed a two-year contract worth $29 million with infielder Ha-Seong Kim, marking a significant offseason acquisition for the team.
Kim, who previously spent four seasons with the San Diego Padres and earned a Gold Glove in 2023, is set to receive $13 million in his first year with the Rays. Additionally, he has the opportunity to earn up to $2 million in performance bonuses, which are based on his plate appearances, starting from 326 and extending to 525, with a bonus of $10,000 per appearance within that range.
Looking ahead, Kim also has a player option valued at $16 million for the 2026 season.
The 29-year-old South Korean player faced a setback in August when he suffered a torn labrum in his right shoulder, which required surgery and effectively ended his season. In the last year of a previous $28 million, four-year deal, Kim concluded his season with a batting average of .233, recording 11 home runs, 47 RBIs, and successfully stealing 22 bases.
Over the course of his MLB career with the Padres, Kim played in 540 games, accruing a .242 batting average with 47 home runs, 200 RBIs, and 78 stolen bases.
In a related move, the Rays designated left-handed pitcher Brandon Eisert for assignment, adjusting their roster as they finalize their offseason strategies.
This strategic signing of Kim reflects the Rays’ commitment to enhancing their lineup and addressing their needs heading into the next season.
