The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced the promotion of Josh Grizzard to offensive coordinator on Friday, taking over the role from Liam Coen.
This marks the fourth time in four years that the Buccaneers have changed their play-caller. The previous two offensive coordinators went on to become head coaches after Baker Mayfield achieved Pro Bowl seasons under their leadership.
Coen recently joined the Jacksonville Jaguars just a week after he decided to withdraw his name from consideration for the position and had initially agreed to a lucrative contract extension with the Buccaneers, which would have made him the highest-paid coordinator in the NFL. However, he changed his decision following the Jaguars’ dismissal of general manager Trent Baalke.
Dave Canales, another former Buccaneers coordinator, took on the position of head coach for the Carolina Panthers after playing a significant role in revitalizing Mayfield’s career in Tampa Bay in 2023.
The Buccaneers let go of Byron Leftwich after the 2022 season, which was also Tom Brady’s last season in the NFL, during which they celebrated a Super Bowl victory together alongside coach Bruce Arians.
In his inaugural season with the Buccaneers, Grizzard was in charge of the team’s passing game and played a key role in managing their third-down strategy. The Buccaneers ended the season as one of the most potent offenses in the league, ranking fourth in scoring (29.5 points per game), third in passing yards (4,257), and tied for second in passing touchdowns (41).
Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles expressed confidence in Grizzard’s capabilities, noting his intelligence and creativity. He highlighted how Grizzard contributed significantly to the team’s strategic planning and play design over the last year.
“After evaluating several impressive candidates, it became increasingly evident that the best fit was within our ranks,” Bowles stated. “We experienced considerable offensive success last season, and Grizzard offered numerous valuable insights into how we can enhance our performance moving forward. His existing rapport with our offensive system, players, and staff will be essential for maintaining our momentum and achieving lasting success.”
During his time under Coen and Grizzard, Mayfield recorded a personal best, amassing 4,500 yards with 41 touchdown passes while boasting a remarkable completion rate of 71.4% and a passer rating of 106.8.
The Buccaneers wrapped up the season with a 10-8 record, securing their fourth consecutive NFC South title, although they were eliminated by Washington in the wild-card playoff round.
