NEW YORK — On Thursday, the New York Mets strengthened their bullpen by signing right-handed pitcher Ryne Stanek to a one-year deal.
Stanek was brought to the team last year in a trade with Seattle, where the Mets exchanged minor league outfielder Rhylan Thomas for him.
During the regular season with the Mets, Stanek experienced some challenges, posting a 6.06 ERA over 17 appearances. However, he emerged as a reliable reliever in the later stages of the postseason, demonstrating his value on the mound.
In total, he pitched eight innings across seven postseason games, during which he gave up three runs and recorded eight strikeouts, showcasing his skills when it mattered most.
Mets president of baseball operations, David Stearns, expressed enthusiasm about Stanek’s return, stating that he became an essential late-inning choice for the team last season.
Stearns noted that Stanek possesses a valuable mix of experience and talent, which will enhance the overall capabilities of the bullpen.
Joining Stanek in the bullpen will be closer Edwin Diaz and left-handed setup man A.J. Minter, creating a formidable relief corps for the Mets.
To accommodate Stanek on the 40-man roster, the team has designated right-hander Dylan Covey for assignment. Covey, who is 33, has not pitched in a major league game since the 2023 season.
For context, Stanek was a first-round selection by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2013 amateur draft. Throughout his career, he has recorded a 17-17 win-loss record, boasting a 3.65 ERA and 11 saves over 401 major league games, with previous stints at Tampa Bay, Miami, and Houston.
