HOBART, Australia — In an impressive display of batting, Mitchell Owen recorded the joint-fastest century in the history of the Big Bash League, propelling the Hobart Hurricanes to their inaugural Australian Twenty20 domestic title on Monday.

Owen’s 39-ball century matched the record set by Craig Simmons in 2014, though he narrowly missed the chance to surpass it after a boundary fell just short of the ropes. After being promoted to the top of the batting order, the 23-year-old Owen has emerged as one of Australia’s most promising talents in the shorter format of the game. He reached his fifty in an astonishingly quick fourth over, going on to smash a remarkable 11 sixes—setting a new BBL final record—and hitting six fours along the way.

“That was an incredible display of hitting, making it easier for us towards the finish,” commented teammate Matthew Wade. The atmosphere was electric at Bellerive Oval, with a sellout crowd of 15,706 enthusiastically chanting Owen’s name as the required run-rate continued to fall.

“It was something really special,” Owen remarked. “What made it truly great was hearing the crowd enjoy the moment. I feel incredibly thankful and proud that we could bring this trophy back to Tasmania.” As his innings progressed, Owen not only delivered a stellar performance but also took the lead as the season’s top run-scorer, surpassing veteran player David Warner.

Owen was eventually dismissed for 108 runs off 44 balls in the 11th over, with the team’s score at 139-3. The Hurricanes triumphed in their chase of 183 runs against the Sydney Thunder, finishing at 185-3 with 35 balls remaining and sealing the victory by seven wickets. With this victory, the Hobart Hurricanes carved their name in BBL history, leaving the Melbourne Stars as the only franchise yet to claim the title.
