SAINT CHARLES, Mo. — Nakyel Shelton contributed significantly to his team’s performance, scoring 15 points, which included two clutch free throws with just three seconds remaining, helping Eastern Illinois secure a narrow victory over Little Rock, 56-54, on Monday night. This win marked the end of a frustrating seven-game losing streak for the Panthers.

Shelton’s shooting was efficient, as he managed to hit 4 of his 8 attempts from the floor, which encompassed 1 out of 4 from beyond the arc, and he was flawless from the free-throw line, hitting all 6 attempts. Alongside Shelton, Kooper Jacobi made his mark by scoring 12 points while also pulling down nine rebounds and making three steals. Artese Stapleton added to the scoring with 10 points, shooting 4 of 10 from the field, including 2 of 5 in three-point attempts.

On the other side, Little Rock (13-8, 7-3) had Ante Beljan leading their efforts with a strong show of 14 points. Isaiah Lewis was also a key contributor, adding 11 points to the scoreboard. Tuongthach Gatkek made a notable impact as well, recording a double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, three steals, and three blocks. However, this defeat ended the Trojans’ impressive five-game winning streak.

Looking ahead, both squads are set to take the court again on Thursday. Eastern Illinois will travel to face Western Illinois, while Little Rock will host Tennessee State, as they aim to bounce back from their respective recent performances.
