Florence, Alabama — In a thrilling overtime showdown on Saturday night, North Alabama triumphed over Austin Peay with a final score of 88-84, thanks in part to an outstanding performance from Daniel Ortiz, who netted 28 points.
Ortiz’s shooting was noteworthy, as he went 8 for 18 from the field, including 5 for 14 from beyond the arc, and he was perfect at the free-throw line, making all seven attempts. This victory improves North Alabama’s record to 14 wins and 7 losses, with a 6-2 standing in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
In addition to Ortiz’s stellar play, Jacari Lane contributed significantly with 22 points, alongside six rebounds and five assists. Will Soucie provided further support, adding 14 points and nearly achieving a double-double with nine rebounds.
On the opposing side, Austin Peay was led by Isaac Haney, who matched Ortiz’s scoring output with 28 points. Sai Witt was a force as well, tallying 21 points and securing 11 rebounds, while Anton Brookshire chipped in with 17 points and facilitated play with nine assists.
The contest had a dramatic finish in regulation as Lane executed a layup with just six seconds remaining, setting up a tense moment. Corneilous Williams stepped up for the Lions with a critical block on Haney’s layup attempt, preserving the tie at 74 points apiece, which pushed the game into overtime.
The extra period saw Lane ignite the scoring with a 3-pointer, and he went on to rack up eight points in overtime, helping North Alabama outscore Austin Peay 14-10 in the additional session.
Overall, it was a hard-fought victory for North Alabama, who demonstrated resilience and teamwork throughout the game.
