BOULDER, Colo. — Frida Formann contributed 14 points, while Jade Masogayo made three crucial blocks during the final quarter as Colorado managed to secure a 63-53 victory over No. 10 Kansas State on Saturday. This win interrupted the Wildcats’ impressive 14-game winning streak.
Masogayo also recorded 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds, aiding Colorado in regaining its momentum following a rough patch where they lost four of their last six games. The Buffaloes now hold a record of 13-6, with a 4-4 standing in the Big 12 conference, improving their performance against ranked teams to 2-2 this season, contrasting with a prior record of 5-9.
On the other side, Serena Sundell scored 13 points for the Wildcats, who suffered their first defeat since November 25, when they played against Duke during the Ball Dawgs Classic.
The Wildcats experienced difficulties in this match, marking their first contest since losing their leading scorer, Ayoka Lee, who was named the Big 12 preseason player of the year, due to a foot fracture. The team has hopes of having their center return before the end of the current season.
Some key takeaways from the match included Coach Jeff Mittie’s continued struggles against the Buffaloes, as he fell to 0-5 in his career against them. Notably, Colorado had previously eliminated Kansas State from the NCAA Tournament last season.
For Colorado, the team’s capacity to maintain their composure was critical, especially after trailing by nine points early in the game.
One pivotal moment occurred when Colorado was leading by four points with 4:40 left in the game; Zyanna Walker attempted a layup that was subsequently blocked by Masogayo. This defensive play was significant as Formann then calmly converted two free throws, allowing Colorado to extend their lead. Masogayo concluded the match with a total of four blocks.
In terms of statistics, the Buffaloes dominated the paint, outscoring the Wildcats 40-26 in that area.
Looking ahead, Colorado is set to play against BYU on Wednesday, whereas Kansas State will be at home to face Iowa State on Thursday.
