Ovechkin closes in on Gretzky’s NHL goal record as Capitals secure 3-0 win over Kraken

SEATTLE — In a thrilling matchup, Alex Ovechkin edged closer to breaking Wayne Gretzky’s long-standing NHL scoring record, netting an empty-net goal which propelled the Washington Capitals to a 3-0 victory over the Seattle Kraken on Thursday night. This win marks the Capitals’ sixth consecutive triumph, showcasing their position as one of the top-performing teams in the league this season.

Ovechkin registered his 22nd goal for the current season, bringing his career tally to an impressive 875 goals, now just 20 shy of Gretzky’s record of 894 goals in the NHL. Meanwhile, goaltender Charlie Lindgren made a notable comeback, saving 22 shots in his first start since January 10, marking his first shutout of the season. This victory also signifies the Capitals’ third shutout in just five games, following impressive performances against Anaheim and Ottawa in the previous week.

Alongside Ovechkin, teammates Aliaksei Protas and Ethen Frank contributed to the scoreline, adding to the Capitals’ commanding play. For the Kraken, Joey Daccord stood strong in goal, making 30 saves during his fifth consecutive start, which also happened to be his 100th game in the NHL.

A few noteworthy moments from the game included assists on Ovechkin’s empty-net goal provided by Trevor van Riemsdyk and Jakob Chychrun with just 3:28 remaining. Pierre-Luc Dubois also kept his momentum going with an assist, extending his point streak to three games. However, Seattle faced challenges, as this game marked their sixth shutout of the season.

The game’s pivotal moment came just 16 seconds before the second period concluded when Lindgren performed a remarkable save against Oliver Bjorkstrand during a breakaway, preserving the shutout.

Looking ahead, both teams are set to return to the ice on Saturday, with the Capitals facing off against Vancouver while the Kraken will host Pittsburgh.
