Authorities on the eastern Greek island of Lesbos announced the closure of schools in a specific area on Wednesday to allow for inspections aimed at assessing structural integrity following an earthquake that struck the area overnight.

The earthquake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 5.1, occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, as reported by the Athens Geodynamic Center. The epicenter was detected at a depth of 10 kilometers (approximately 6 miles) to the east-northeast of Mithymna, situated between Lesbos and the nearby Turkish coastline.

Fortunately, no injuries or significant damage were reported as a result of the quake. However, local officials mentioned that several minor rock slides had taken place along local roadways.

Greece is situated in a region known for its seismic activity, although most earthquakes result in little to no harm or structural damage. In June 2017, a more powerful earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale hit Lesbos, leading to one fatality and injuring ten others. Additionally, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in 2020 near Samos claimed the lives of several individuals in nearby Izmir, Turkey, as well as two fatalities on the island itself.
